Vegetable Championships

This years Autumn show saw two Vegetable Championships taking place, The North of England Horticultural Society Vegetable Championships together with the National Onion Championships, and The National Vegetable Society Northern Branch Championships 2011.

North of England Horticultural Society Vegetable Championships & National Onion Championships

Main sponsor Kitchen Garden, also sponsored by Keith Foster Exhibition Seeds and Link-a-Bord.

New this year was a competition to find the North of England Horticultural Society's 2011 Master Gardener. The new class called for all-round excellence with cut flowers, a potted plant, a dish of fruit and a dish of vegetables. The winner was John Smiles, from Tong in West Yorkshire, who is pictured right.

The results of the NEHS championship classes were: 

Heaviest Onion – Peter Glazebrook, Newark, 17lb 15.5oz, setting a new world record.

National Carrot Championship – Ian Simpson, Fife, Scotland

National Leek Championship – David Metcalfe, Nelson, Lancs

National Potato Championship – David Peel, Mirfield, West Yorks

   

The National Vegetable Society Northern Branch Championships 2011

Including collections, celery, cauliflower, onions, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, beetroot, shallots, parsnips, leeks, beans, cucumbers, marrows and cabbages.
