Designed to Last

Forget fancy features and grand gazebos, we’re getting back to basics here at Harrogate Flower Shows, as we launch a new competition aimed at tackling a series of problem garden spaces – and you could be the client!

Are roses the only option for heavy clay soil?

Whether you struggle with impossible clay soil or perhaps suffer from a scorching or exposed site, we have someone who can help.  Harrogate Flower Show is offering four lucky home-owners the chance to get help with a problem plot and win £300 to spend on plants into the bargain!

The aim of the new competition is to find practical, show-stopping inspiration for the everyday problems faced by gardeners at home. We are asking you to send us a brief outlining the growing conditions causing your conundrum. We will choose the best four entries to challenge our teams of designers and landscapers, who will build show gardens at the 2018 Harrogate Spring Flower Shows that are Designed to Last.

Each section of our new show garden display will feature one of the four briefs presented by you, with £300 to spend on plants awaiting the person whose problem plot wins the top award at the show.

Our themes for 2018 are:

Dark & boggy

The light never really quite reaches your plot, but water certainly does.  From squelchy lawns to puddle-filled borders, you really struggle with making the most of your space!

Bright & warm

Your garden is a magnet for sunshine, providing a light-filled plot throughout the day. It’s warm and sheltered too - question is, are you making the best of your little piece of the British Mediterranean?

Exposed or dry

No amount of frantic hose pipe action can keep your plants moist. The oncoming wind doesn't help either, limiting your choice to drought tolerant or a cycle of annual replacement.

Concrete or clay?

Drawn the gardening short straw? Ground so heavy that it takes most of your effort just to dig a planting hole and then the plants never really look their best – there must be a solution!

If your garden, or a section of your garden, fits one of the 2018 themes, we would like to hear from you. Entering couldn't be easier – all you need to do is fill in a client brief application form, available during from the show Information Point or downloaded from our website at

Provide as much detail as you can about your plot, including photographs and soil type.  Remember the more information and description you can give us, the greater your chance of being selected to challenge our teams of designers,

Entries close Friday 8 December 2017.
